Valgete jõuludeta oli ikkagi rõõmus meeleolu BESi jõulupeol. Even without snow, it was a joyful Christmas banquet.

Kuigi lumevaip ei katnud maad, Jõuluvana ja umbes kaheksakümmend inimest ikkagi leidsid tee Bostoni Eesti Seltsi traditsioonilise jõulupeole 17. detsembril Scandinavian Cultural Centeris. Jõulupeole koguneti mugavas ja ilusas Nordic Hall saalis, mis oli ülesseatud pererahva poolt. Kaunistatud söögilauad, särav jõulupuu, jõululoterii ja piduliku õhtusöögi lõhn ootasid külalisi.

Pererahvas oli juba mitu tundi enne jõulupeo algust kohale jõudnud, et valmistada seltsi poolt pakutud jõulu peorooga. Rahvas hakkas kogunema juba vara, kõvasti enne peo algust! Varsti oli saal täis ja programm algas pihta Bostoni Eesti Seltsi presidendi, Paul Attemanni, tervitusega. Nooremad Bostoni Eesti Kooli lapsed alustasid jõulukontserti ilusate jõululauludega ning Triin Vallaste saatis neid kandlel. Järgnevalt esinesid vanemad koolilapsed mitme lauluga. Kui lapsed olid ära esinenud, tulid lavale lapsevanemad ja terve koolipere laulis paar regilaulu koos! Kuid see polnud veel kõik; Epp-Karike Sonin istus klaveri taha ja laulis klaveri saatel paar ilusat jõululaulu. Üks nendest oli Püha Öö, mida Epp palus, et rahvas laulaks kaasa, kas inglise või eesti keeles. Saal kõlas kaunilt mõlemas keeles.

Soojaks söögiks pakuti verivorsti, hapukapsast, röstitud kartulit, pohlamoosi ja rukkileiba– oi kui maitsev oli!!! Magustoidu laual oli piparkoogid, kringleid ja keekse, mida lapsed heameelega pugisid. Suurimad tänud korraldajatele, kelleks olid Aadu Pirn ja Louise Jakobson. Nende abilisteks olid Nele Kaps, Madli Mangum, Paul Attemann ja Madis Idarand.

Peale söömist, Epu juhtimisel kõlasid vahvalt jõululaulud, mida jõuluvana kaugelt kuulis. Varsti oli tema koputamas saaliuksele, et sisse saaks- kingitusi oli vaja ju tublidele lastele välja jagada! Muidugi oli jõulutaat teretulnud ning mugav tugitool oli kuusepuu kõrval jõuluvana nimega juba ootamas. Nooremad lapsed olid ehmunud, aga vanemad lapsed olid valmis näitama kui tublid nad aasta jooksul on olnud oma ettevalmistatud esinemistega. Mõned lapsed lugesid luuletusi, mõned laulsid ja mõned mängisid muusikainstrumenti. Sõnad juba ammu peas, üks grupp noori tuli kokku, et laulda veel ühte lemmiklaulu, Curly String’ide Kauges Külas jõuluvanale. Kui kingikott oli tühjaks saanud, lahkus jõuluvana oma saanis ja põhjapõtradega, et edasi reisida ja oma kohustusi täita. Loodame, et järgmisel aastal tuleb jõulutaat meie peole tagasi!

Enne külaliste lahkumist toimus loosimine. Seltsi juhatus valmistas vahva loterii ja elavoksjoni. Paljud külalised lahkusid toredate kingitustega, milleks olid näiteks käsitsi kootud Eesti kindad, nahast käsitöö, eesti raamatud ja muusika, käsitsi valmistatud šokolaadid, piletid järgmisele Boston Balti filmifestivalile ja palju muud. Kaks uhket jõulukorvi kodutehtud moosiga, verivorstidega, rukkileivaga, hapukapsaga ja kinkekaart Democracy Brewingule olid ka auhinnaks elavoksjonil. (Kahjuks kaks raamitud eesti plakatit jäid müümata.)

Isegi ilma valgete jõuludeta, oli ikkagi meeleolu rõõmus BES’i jõulupeol. Soovime lugejatele meie Seltsi poolt lootusrikast Uut Aastat!

Even though there was no snow on the ground, Santa Claus and about eighty people still found their way to the Boston Estonian Society's traditional Christmas party on December 17 at the Scandinavian Cultural Center. The gathering was held in the comfortable and beautiful Nordic Hall, which had been set up by BES; decorated dining tables, a Christmas tree, and the smell of a festive dinner awaited the guests.

Volunteers had arrived several hours before the Christmas party was due to start to prepare the Christmas festivities. The crowd started gathering early, well before schuduled start time. Soon the hall was packed and the programm got underway with a welcome from the President of the Boston Estonian Society, Paul Attemann. The younger children of the Boston Estonian School started the Christmas concert with beautiful Christmas songs and Triin Vallaste accompanied them on the kannel. The older schoolchildren followed with several songs. When the children had finished, the parents came on stage and the whole school family sang a few regilaulud together! But that wasn't all; Epp-Karike Sonin sat down at the piano to sing some beautiful Christmas songs accompanied by the piano. One of them was Holy Night, which Epp asked the crowd to sing along to, either in English or Estonian. The hall sang beautifully in both languages.

For a warm meal we had blood sausage, sauerkraut, roast potatoes, pohlam jam and rye bread - oh how delicious it was!!!! On the dessert table there were gingerbread, cakes and cookies, which the children enjoyed eating. Many thanks to the pererahvas, Aadu Pirn and Louise Jakobson. They were assisted by Nele Kaps, Madli Mangum, Paul Attemann and Madis Idarand.

After the meal, Epp led the singing of a few more Christmas carols, which Santa Claus could hear from far away. Soon he was knocking on the hall door to be let in - presents had to be handed out to the good children! Of course, jõuluvana was welcomed in and a comfy armchair was waiting next to the tree with his name on it. The younger children were extremely excited, and the older children were ready to show how good they had been all year with their prepared performances. Some of the children read poems, some sang and some played musical instruments. With the lyrics already memorized, a group of youngsters came together to sing Kauges külas, a popular song by the Estonian bluegrass and folk band, Curly Strings. When the gift bag was empty, Santa left with his sleigh and reindeer to travel on to fulfill his yearly duties. We hope Santa will return to our party next year!

Before the guests left, a raffle was held. The Society's board prepared a fun raffle and a lively auction. Many of the guests left with great gifts such as hand-knitted Estonian gloves, leather handicrafts, Estonian books and music, hand-made chocolates, tickets to the next Boston Baltic Film Festival in March and much more. Two lucky winners won a gorgeous Christmas basket with homemade pohlamoos (cranberry jam), verivorstid (blood sausages), rukkileib (rye bread) hapukapsas (sauerkraut) and a generous gift card to Democracy Brewing. Sadly, two framed Estonian posters went unsold.
